Surf Photographer Documents Laguna Madre

The Laguna Madre Field Station, constructed on a dredge-material island by the Center for Coastal Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, is a staging area for sample collections, environmental monitoring and continued outreach and education. Recent areas of focus include harmful algal blooms, black mangrove expansion, avian movements and hydrological modeling. Texas surf photographer Jon Steele is the latest artist-in-residence for the program, following three painters. A Texas native, he makes his living traveling the world, documenting surf and capturing his perspective of the world’s oceans. Steele spent a week last fall documenting the everyday life of the South Texas island and creating art for his March show at the Art Center of Corpus Christi. All proceeds benefit the field station.
