WHERE IN TEXAS
Granite blocks flank the shoreward side of the pier that juts into the Gulf of Mexico at Matagorda Bay between Port O’Connor and Galveston. The Colorado river reaches the Gulf here where the pier serves visitors. In 1827 Stephen F. Austin secured permission from the Mexican government in 1827 to create a town to protect incoming settlers, making Matagorda one of the oldest towns in Texas.
