Hunters match skills in the South Texas town of Freer each fall at the granddaddy of all Texas hunting contests, thecelebrating 55 years in 2020. Founded by Leonel “Muy” Garza in 1965, the decades-old deer contest was once called “the little filling station deer contest.” Muy is still one of the judges.
It’s pretty straightforward: bring your harvest in to the store for official scoring, then wait till the season ends to see if you get this year’s bragging rights in any category.
