STATE PARK ADVENTURES

Hill Country Backcountry

As the summer heat loosens its grip and the calendar turns to fall, the trees at Lost Maples State Natural Area prepare for their annual autumn pageant. Change is in the air.

Part of the appeal comes from the setting. Lost Maples is a place of rugged limestone canyons, Hill Country springs, grasslands, wooded slopes and clear-flowing streams — natural attractions that extend year-round.

A backpacking trip provides the surest way to immerse yourself in all that Lost Maples has to offer. Sometimes one day is not enough to explore the park’s trails. An overnight backpacking trip allows access to the remote corners of this scenic park. Along the way, you’ll encounter sweeping vistas, shady canyons and trickling streams.

Lost Maples offers 10 miles of trails and seven backcountry camping areas. The popular East Trail follows the Sabinal River before heading uphill to some of the highest points in the park. The West Trail provides a more secluded experience, including a trek through scenic Mystic Canyon.

Both trails have steep and challenging terrain mixed with quiet, shaded areas along flowing water. It’s easy to link them together for a rewarding weekend backpack.

That pack on your back may feel heavy, but it’s got everything you need (fingers crossed) for a night or two on the trail — tent, sleeping bag, food, water and camp stove. The trails at Lost Maples allow you to do a manageable number of miles and still feel as though you’re getting away from it all (provided you can avoid the fall crowds).

More than maples

Lost Maples covers almost 2,200 acres of classic Hill Country terrain — canyons, hills and streams. It’s a state natural area rather than a state park, which means the focus is on maintaining the park’s natural state.

Camping

Birding

The park contains rich and varied bird life. Look for golden-cheeked warblers and black-capped vireos (in spring and summer), ravens, kingfishers and zone-tailed hawks.

Fall Foliage

The park’s special stand of Uvalde bigtooth maples provides a colorful show each fall. Autumn is by far the park’s busiest season.

Hiking

Camping

In addition to the backcountry sites, Lost Maples has 30 sites with water and electricity in the main campground.
