IN YOUR OWN BACkyARD

Want to Binge-Watch Hummingbirds?

Of more than 300 species of hummingbirds, only nine are common to Texas. Most ruby-throated hummingbirds arrive in Texas between mid-March and mid-May and breed from early April to early September. Many Texans put up feeders that mimic the tubular red flowers that attract these beauties. Use a sugar-water mixture that is one part sugar to four or five parts water. If it’s not sipped away by the hummers, change it every few days to prevent fermenting; scrub the feeder at each filling to prevent mold.
