Among the 254 counties in Texas, Angelina County stands out as the only one named after a woman. A member of the Caddo Nation’s Hasinai Confederacy, Angelina made an impact as a translator for both French and Spanish explorers traveling through East Texas in the early 1700s. In addition to the county, Angelina also has a river and forest bearing her name, plus a statue and mural in downtown Lufkin.
