WHEN I WAS a kid, spring’s arrival wasn’t marked by gradually warming temperatures, the emergence of bluebonnets or the turning of the calendar to April. Spring began the day pitchers and catchers reported to start their training for the upcoming season; baseball was the soundtrack of summer. Almost daily, we hastily organized pickup games at our local park. Baseball and the park — this is what summer looked like.
A few decades later, my wife and I are taking our boys to the Texas Panhandle so I can check Palo Duro Canyon off my bucket list. The night before our hike we watch the minor-league Amarillo Sod Poodles take on the Frisco RoughRiders. During the game, my son Clark leans over.
“Dad, you know what we should have done? Gone to the state park and then the ballpark, same day. That way it would have been a Texas state park/ballpark doubleheader.”
Clark instinctively knew what I did at his age — parks and baseball make for an awesome summer day. We’re here to help you plan your own Texas day/night doubleheader. We’ve focused on the eight minor-league teams across Texas and highlighted 25 state parks, all within an hour of one of these ballparks.

FRISCO
Team: Frisco RoughRiders (AA affiliate of the Texas Rangers)
Ballpark: Riders Field
Location: 7300 Roughriders Trail, Frisco
Capacity: 10,216 (7,748 seats)
The pavilions surrounding the concourse at Riders Field were designed to give the stadium a “coastal Galveston aesthetic.” They’re striking (and, um, landlocked). Also striking: the park’s 174-foot-long, 68,000-gallon Lazy River, the largest water feature in a professional sporting venue. Adding to the fun are the four mascots: prairie dogs Deuce and Daisy, Bull Moose and Ted E. Bear, who resembles Rough Rider (and President) Theodore Roosevelt.
DAY/NIGHT DOUBLEHEADER SPECIAL:
Bring your day-of state park admission receipt to the RoughRiders box office for a buy-one, get-one-free ticket offer.
NEARBY STATE PARKS
RAY ROBERTS LAKE (34 miles to Riders Field)
Ray Roberts Lake is perfect for those who can’t get enough of the water. Swim at one of the beach areas, paddle in the coves or drop a line in the lake or the kids’ fishing pond. Prefer to stay dry? Explore miles of trails on foot, bike or horseback.
CEDAR HILL (40 miles to Riders Field)
Find lakefront fun at Cedar Hill, which sits on the shore of Joe Pool Lake. The park offers two lighted fishing jetties and a perch pond for junior anglers. At the park you can also tour the Penn Farm Agricultural History Center and see how farming has changed over the past 100 years.
BONHAM (60 miles to Riders Field)
Bonham State Park may be on the small side — the lake is a compact 65 acres — but it abounds in natural beauty. Explore the park’s plant life on the easy 1.3-mile Lake Loop Trail, or explore the CCC’s legacy on the more challenging 2.7-mile Bois d’Arc Trail.
EISENHOWER (60 miles to Riders Field)
Eisenhower State Park sits on the shores of Lake Texoma, less than 10 miles from the early home of our 34th president. The park offers more than four miles of hiking and biking trails, plus places to swim, climb rocks, picnic, play horseshoes or just enjoy a push on the swings.

LAKE CORPUS CHRISTI (41 miles to Whataburger Field)
If freshwater fishing is more your thing, try your luck at catching bass, crappie, sunfish or catfish from one of Lake Corpus Christi’s two fishing piers, one of which is 400 feet long and wheelchair accessible. Keep your eyes out for birds as well — more than 200 species have been identified.
