Blackout!
If you’ve never seen a snake like this, you’re not alone. Use your imagination to add yellow and red stripes all down the body, and you’ll be able to identify it as a Texas coral snake. What happened to its trademark stripes? This aberrant specimen is melanistic, meaning it has excessive black pigmentation. Wildlife photographer Seth Patterson shared a friend’s fascinating find recently on Facebook in August.
