Sunfish Showdown

Mentored kids' bluegill tournament celebrates National Hunting and Fishing Day.

For about as long as anyone can remember, there’s been a sweet little fishing tournament on the last weekend in September at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens. Kids and mentors pair up in teams to compete for prizes in a day full of family fun.

The event, held Sept. 24 in conjunction with National Hunting and Fishing Day, runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lake Zebco.

“The Sunfish Showdown is our way of celebrating our state’s rich hunting and fishing heritage through teaching opportunities and fun bluegill fishing, which are many folks’ first fish,” says TFFC education coordinator Katelyn Barkalow. “This event is supported by several of our Texas Parks and Wildlife Department team members, showcasing their hard work to protect our natural resources in different ways, from fish hatcheries to law enforcement, so that we may continue to pass down these Texas traditions.”

Prizes for the biggest fish, smallest fish and most fish caught will be awarded following the tournament. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to win hourly door prizes.
